Cover for paths
« on: September 19, 2010, 12:33 »
I've been thinking of a cover on the paths between my beds. Rather than the usual wood chip I thought about sowing something there. Had a quick look round the internet and I saw that someone uses Dwarf white clover for this.
Is there anything else anyone recommends, and is there anything that could be sown now to get a start before winter sets in (maybe a green manure?)

I had very nice woodchip on earth paths.
Then we got chickens and I let them forage between the raised beds.
Now I have bare earth that's been scratched up on either side so there are gullies and I teeter along the narrow raised middle.
God knows where the bark went!!!
No point in me planting a path!!! ::)

We have clay soil, and although we have raised beds I favour grass (or something like that) paths.  Much less mucky, IME, in Winter than gravel or something else that will pick up on your boots. Plus you can (sort of) scrape any dropped clods off, and put back on the beds, which is less easy to do with gravel. Any weeds in the paths get mowed! rather than having to be weeded. But, yup, mowing the paths is another job (although I don't mind mowing, personally)

I managed to get hold of some shredded hedge trimmings, leaves, little twigs, some bark all in small pieces and it looks really nice and rustic, when it rots down i add more, simple!
