What is a "deep bed"? Why is it "deep"?

And what is it's purpose? How is it constructed? I notice from John's "planning the alloment" that he talks about deep beds. How is this different to a raised bed  :?:

Its the same. Basically the deep comes from an increased depth of soil from the raised aspect which in turn allows for greater root growth.

I hope this helps, but I'm not too sure even I can follow my previous sentence. :?:

How deep is deep? So, a deep bed would be suitable for say carrots/parsnips or blanching celery? I'd want to add some sand to my clay-loam then.

Sorry for the beginner's question. Everything I've read about so far seems to presume the reader knows what one is.  :oops:
