Sick? Coci? Worms?
« on: September 17, 2010, 18:56 »
I have a RIR chicken whose a year old.  She has been molting for quite awhile. I live in So. Oregon.. Our weather has been crazy, hot one day, cool the next.  She's with 30 other mixed chickens.  I noticed two days ago she was in a nest box and when I flashed a light on her, her comb was pale compared to the others.  She is thin when you pick her up.  Her skin where her feathers are gone is yellowish and dry.

I thought maybe Coci so I did one day of Sulmet.  I know that Corid is better and got some yesterday.  I have stopped the Sulmet and am waiting to see if I should give her the Corid.  Does this sound like Coci?  She's thin and not thrifty looking.  They were all wormed awhile ago and been waiting for weather to get cooler to worm again.  I don't like to worm all the time.  I give them ACV in their water, Purina Layena Pellets, Sunfresh scratch, Oyster Shell, and bugs and things from the garden.  We do have a mouse problem that we are trying like heck to get rid of.

9/14/2010 Another site told me they didn't think I should use Sulmet or Corid, they didn't believe it was Coci, just do Vitamins, and such.  She ate over half her 8 oz. cup of food I gave her.  She's been drinking her ACV water and eating grass.  We checked her again, still talking, running around once we opened the dog playpen up.  I have attached pictures of her, beak which is blurry in one (sorry) and her poop.  Most of the poop in the area, her bedding is green.  The brownish on the litter to the right was this morning but when I smeared it, it's brown, not blooming or red. Her tummy is flat.  No eggs felt at all.

Update 9/16/2010: Gave her some oatmeal, egg, probotics and she didn't eat much. Not sure if it was the oatmeal she didn't like or what.  Wasn't as active today, had green solid poops again which "look normal" per the Queen of Poo's page.  (Thank you) Still thin in the keel, should I start Corid and what dose?  Should I worm her?  They were all wormed in the spring.  Some of the other chickens have the dark really soft poop but doesn't look blooming at all.  Everyone's been dusted with Sevin.

9/17/2010-She ate 4 oz. of food, 10 grape tomatoes, vitamin water, grass, and some scratch.  Poops still solid, mostly green.

Hello Skyebleu,
I am not an expert but just wanted to wish you well with your hen.  You seem to be doing all the right things.  I am sure someone with more experience will be along to advise you.  It is very useful to have the pictures.  I am also impressed with your recording and it should make it easier to get answers for you :).  Keep use posted.

9/18/2010: It appears she ate about 8 oz. of pellets again and a bunch of clover. Still thin feeling and comb is still pale.  I think she must be molting since she hasn't laid an egg for quite awhile now.  Her crop is soft and feels like it should.  I've decided to worm her since it's raining here and she's not producing any eggs anyway.  So I started her today on 7.5 ml of Wazine 17% in one quart of water.  I might do it for two days in a row, haven't decided yet.  Any opinions?  If this doesn't work, should I use Corid?  I know this is the UK correct so I am not sure if the drugs are the same there as here.  Thank you.

Yes I have...we have dusted them with Sevin, nest boxes and such, and they also have a dust bath with Sevin, sand, and dirt.  We are going to totally clean the coop this week hopefully when the sun comes out again  and pressure wash.  Thanks.
