Leeks
« on: September 14, 2010, 10:11 »
Just a question on Leeks.  My Leeks are growing but they are still rather small (diameter wise).  Can I feed them with anything to get them growing, also when will they stop growing any more?

You could try a bit of fertiliser maybe - they will keep on growing in my experience.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Mine are really small - but I stupidly planted them in a bit of a shaded area in my garden (this was before I got my allotment).  And - I realised quite sometime after I planted them - that you're to drill holes and plonk the leek in the ground that way - I just planted mine as I would normal seedlings - and I assume this has had some effect on their diameter??

Oh well - we can have baby leeks for Christmas dinner!

I'd leave them be as it's now getting a bit late for fertiliser, might promote too much fleshy growth that will be affected by the first frosts - of course if you want to eat them soon and don't want them to stand over the winter then you might feel differently.

Ok thanks, I think I'll leave them and hope for the best.

Yes you can feed them, either mix a handfull of chicken manure pellets in water, leave a while then mix and water in or as I do, sprinkle them around the bed, it will give them a boost before the cold weather starts.
