Is there any point in sowing Christmas potatoes on the 13th Sept?

No, there's no hope of getting a decent crop
Yes, I did this and managed to get a few at Christmas
Yes, you probably won't get much, but its worth a try
No, because of the blighty weather, it'll end in tears!

I can't decide- will you decide for me? :-)

Hi all... i have some Kestrel chitted and waiting to get sown but fear I'm too late.
Most sites seem to recommend sowing by end of August, and one site suggests up to the first week in September.
If you have experience of sowing them this late, would love to hear how you fared!
Thanks :)

You are in the warm where you are ;) and you already have the chitted spuds, so i think you may as well try.
You have no great expectations, so there's nothing to lose really, is there?
Keep the fleece handy, or move under cover if you can..good luck...you'll need it

Yeah, don't waste them!  Even if you only get a few in the New Year, at least give them a chance!  :D

They are chitted so no good to eat.

If you don't plant them you will get NOTHING.

Let us know how they get on !

Yes and send me some of the results in the post in December!  :tongue2: The ones we planted a month ago just haven't come.

I planted my Christmas potatoes just over a week ago - knowing that they were late, but had just acquired my allotment (which required considerable de-weeding first!).  So I'm pleased they are in the ground - and will be pleased with whatever result I get - large or small. ;)

Let us know how you get on with yours!

Got some in a bin planted about a month ago, and some in the ground about a week later. The ones in the bin have grown really well so far, just hope there is no frost while OH is away cos there's no way I can move them to the greenhouse. The ones in the ground are well through and have been earthed up. Never put them in the ground before as there is no space in summer.

Anyone up (very) north needs to keep an eye on the weather if they have pots in, they were mentioning frost with the possibility of snow this week....where is the summer? I missed it!

eek

I dig up my spuds when I need them for a meal, so I haven't even thought of digging up my remaining spuds yet.

I'm a recent allotment holder too Mary... I'm still de-weeding! Excavating bramble roots, as the entire plot is covered in them! But ooh isn't it nice to have your own plot!!?
So, it's taken til now to clear a patch for the late spuds, because they were lower on the priorities than getting early spuds (planted v late), tomatoes, brassicas and beans in!
It's gonna be a long Autumn and Spring of digging for me!

Will let you know how my Christmas spuds get on! Nice to know I'm not the only late one! :-) Maybe we'll both get lucky this year!

Thanks everyone for your input :-)
