Point of Lay? RIR & French Copper Marans
« on: September 10, 2010, 14:05 »
I have 4 RIRs & 4 french copper black marans in the same pen.  They are all about 18 - 19 weeks old.  They are altogether with 2 french copper maran cockerells.  I have put some pot eggs in the nest boxes, but they are not showing any interest at all in laying.  At what age can I expect the girls to start producing?  I am rearing the cockerells for the table.  - Can anyone help me with the best age for me to carry out the necessary!!

Hens normally start laying on average around 23 weeks although they may be a bit irregular at this time of year due to the shortening length of daylight hours. Not sure on the cockerel deed but I would think when they look and feel big enough with plenty of meat on them. Guessing around 25 - 30 weeks but I am sure someone will come along with a more precise answer.
