swollen pad on a bronze turkey
« on: September 07, 2010, 21:33 »
Hi, i have just noticed that one of our 12 week old turkey poults has a swollen pad, it is about twice the size of the other one and is looking sorry for itself, and unsteady on its feet. we have had them 2 days now and think it might be bumblefoot, does anyone have any advice or should we take him to the vets in the morning.

I would get it to a vets just incase it is bumblefoot and it needs treating.
Staffies are softer than you think.

As one who has had recent experience of this, I'd advise a trip to the vets asap.

Good Luck.

Mary.

I have spoken to my vet and she is giving me oral antibiotics. i read on the internet  last night that cleaning the foot helps, but she said this is a waste of time.
mary what treatment did you have for yours and did it work.

Here is a fantastic link to treating bumblefoot with really great pics.
http://www.backyardchickens.com/LC-disease-chicken-bumblefoot-surgery.php

Don't be frightened to do it yourself, it will save vet fees and you will gain the skills for if you ever have to do it again. I took my chicken to the vet and she did not even know what bumblefoot was! useless. I got all my info from the site in the link and treated it myself (but got antibiotics from the vet - she was useful for something!)

Hope it helps.
