whitefly and soapy water
« on: September 01, 2010, 13:54 »
is it alright to use any kind of washing up liquid and water to try and get rid of whitefly? i have some PSB growing quite happily now but these little moth type things have decided to move into them, i have just aguired some pukka debris netting but would like to try and get rid of these flies.
if soapy water is ok how much soap to say a watering can full of water do i use?

thanks

Since I'm in Canada, I can tell you that I use a good squirt of liquid soap to roughly a litre/quart of water. Cool water is better as hot water causes lots of troublesome bubbles. I soak the trouble areas well and reapply if it rains. It takes a few times to get rid of most of my pests. For a watering can, I just use a litre container mix and keep dumping it into the watering can so I know I have enough soap but not overly much.

IN my experience i think you better to spray the mixture(agree on dilution rate) on the underside of the leaves were the little devils live. Watering over the top nowhere near as effective

meant to say that if you havnt netted yet. Spray for a couple off weeks to reduce whitefly, then as cabbagewhite butterfly will have died off, cover with a open nett to keep the birds off. For me in last 2yrs whitefly seem to have thrived under debris net(sheltered environment)

My Brassicas are covered in whitefly too. Is soapy water really much good with them? I thought that was more suitable for Aphids due to the effect on thin skins etc If its any good on Whitefly I'll definitely give it a go.

Any idea how much damage will the whitefly do if left alone?

I sprayed the whitefly time & time again with soapy water last year.

All I got was very clean whitefly.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
