just managed to pick up 4 bags of very fresh horse poo after an event in our local park. Could I add this in layers to my compost bins for use in the spring to grow spuds in? Or should it be left for longer?

I'm sure there'll be better answers but I'd say 6 months rotting should be enough....

I suspect that 6 months, including the cold winter, will not be sufficient.  Composting activity slows down significantly over winter.

I think the minimum (weather dependent) is 6 months and the max is 2 years?
I think that you're supposed to wait until it doesn't smell like horse pooh anymore!
I just dig mine out from the field where I keep my pony!

our horses seems to be well rotten within 6 months, but it is a large compost heap that i add lots of other stuff to too
