Garlic novice.
« on: August 18, 2010, 09:04 »
I have grown garlic for the first time this year. Some I got from the garden centre. Not sure about the type but they have grown well and are just starting to brown off a little. Some of them have developed bulges half way up the stem just a little larger then a pea. Can anyone tell me what this is caused by?

It could be the start of a flower head, time ease them up a little so they dry off properly before it grows any more.

Its almost certainly a small head of garlic which occurs occasionally generally in soft neck varieties. The small head grows about 2 inches above the ground and its just another method of reproduction.

does this new head affect its edability. Also, next time I am going to try a hard variety and as advised will plant them out in late Sept. Is it best to start them off in pots and any advice on hardy varieties which will produce large cloves.

This small head of garlic makes no difference to the main head of garlic. Unless you have restricted space its fine to plant over wintered garlic straight into its final position. I grew a variey called Germidour this last season and they were fine but plagued with rust but it didn't appear to effect the end product. There are loads of other varieties to choose from which I am sure others will be able to advise on.
