If I'm lucky and they are setting well, I restrict them to 2 on each 'branch' as I'd rather have bigger ones than lots of small ones ;)

I don't seem to have that problem now it's turned wet and coolish :(

Good luck with yours, though :)

Trying them for the first time and the idea of restricting fruits sounds appealling but I do not6 have any.  It is mid August so I suspect none will ripen unless I am very lucky.
Time waits for no man and I can't wait for growth.

I just let them all grow and cut them when they lose the green colour. I cut the first four of this years crop this morning as the sun had dried them nicely.
I prefer lots of 4 portion sized squash to a few big ones but am happy with what comes along. :)

Squash plants need a lot of sun and warmth so the best thing for most UK growers is to limit the amount of fruit per 'branch' so that they can ripen in time. Those in more sheltered areas can let the vines put on more fruit, but even in my warmer climate I stop that at a certain amount per vine to realistically ripen. With the continuous heatwave we've had all summer I have at least 20 fruit ripening and more half grown. I think it's gonna be a squash year  :D

Good point. last year we used about a 1/4 of a BNS for the Sunday Roast for 6 people, and 3/4 chopped up in a baking tray in the oven was then converted to soup.  Risk is that its Soup Every Day ... :(
