Raised beds on wheels
« on: August 15, 2010, 13:02 »
Early in the year I saw some raised beds on wheels at RHS Wisley. I couldn't afford the system at the time, and stupidly didn't make a note of the manufacturers (I think it was American). I've tried to locate the same product but have been stumped.

So does anyone know what they're called/where I might find some? The bed is on wheels, as I said, and it comes with a trellis that you put into the back of the bed.

Any ideas? It might be somewhere on this site but I'm not sure where to satrt looking - so perhaps some directions might be useful?

Sounds a great idea - BUT - it would have to be pretty substantial to move it as soil weight a ton! If the beds are made of wood, they will eventually rot and wheeling it about won't help if the wheels are not strong enough. It would also depend on how big they are. Why not go to a local tip or reclaim yard and build one so you can see how good the system works - could save you a lot of expense. Also, why do you need to move it?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Thank you Goosegirl ... the base is made of plastic and they're on plastic wheels so that you can easily move them around a small garden to catch the sun. If I have a heavy one made of wood it would have to just stay there - wherever it's put, and that's a bit tricky in my garden which is space-poor for long-term constructions. The whole thing is very light-weight so after the season it's an option to dismantle it for storage.

It would have to be very small to allow you to move it. Assuming 1 metre square with a depth of 30cm it could weigh several hundred kg if full of wet soil. Why not just use large pots....much easier to move around.

Moving large containers full of earth = Big Back problems!!

Grow-bags, as GrannieAnnie suggests, would be a more manageable option - probably considerably cheaper too. You would have fresh growing medium every year and be able to add the previous year's material to some more permanent pots or tubs if you beef up the compost a little by adding pelleted chicken manure.

The moveable raised beds sounds novel but I think these would need to be more like stretched window boxes to be mobile.

I've used an old and quite deep wheel barrow for the last few years. Early in the year it grows 5 potato plants to be followed by 9 self-blanching celery which I'm cutting at the moment. With a bit of luck I'll also get some winter lettuce in it....3 crops for the price of one.

what about an old wheel barrow?

There's divergent thinking!  :)
Sounds a simple solution....once someone comes up with the idea.  :)
