Dawn in Spain... I need your help!!

Hi Dawninspain
What do you call the mite powder for dusting the hens?  The man at the pet place (animal feed too) thinks I am mad as it is! The neighbours (Spanish) never dust their hens visions of Mr Sheen   so it is no good asking them!

Hi oliveview,

I'm sorry I don't know.  We've only had our hens for a few weeks and plan soon to go and chat to the vet about worming and mites etc.

In our chicken supply shop there is nothing for sale for either worms or mites.

Have your hens got red mite?

If and when I manage to find out I will PM you.

By the way - how are your tomatoes - we are having trouble with ours just wilting and dying almost overnight. THey have plenty of water.

Hi Pamela and Dawn.  Why don't you order some worm, mite and lice treatments on line  :?:

What I would recommend is flubenvet for all worms, and diatom, red mite powder and lice powder for lice and mites

Try these places:

SPR
Farmrite
For Animals

Thank you very much for the idea Aunt Sally - I'll take a look at those links but it might be that the price of postage is prohibitive.

Our experience here with vets is that they are much cheaper than the UK. For example annual injections for 2 dogs plus worming tabs and scalibor collars which do fleas and lice is about 50 euros (i.e. aout £30). There are no extortionate charges for medicine if they need it - the vet just writes you a prescription which you take to the ordinary pharmacy and you pay the price on the packet, which so far, in our experience has only been a pound or two.

It might be that there is a Spanish equivalent of flubenvet and diatom. Particularly with the worming I am keen not to give anything that would mean discarding eggs for a while.

Our neighbour went to the chemist and bought over the counter 2 lots of injections for her pups (8 weeks old) with 2 syringes it cost 6.90€  about 4.70 pounds!! for 4 lots of injections!  I wish we could do that with our dog, but he has a pet passport so needs the book signed and stamped etc.

There is no egg withdrawal time for either of these products or with red mite and louse powder either  :D

Hello Pamela.

Went to the vets today and was given:

(for worms) Zipyran Plus - one quarter of a tablet per chicken every 6 months - 1 euro per tablet. This is actually licensed for dogs but the vet said it was suitable for chickens.

(for red mite prevention) Ivermectina - 3 drops on the back of the chickens neck every 6 months. I small bottle that will probably do two lots of treatment 9 euros.

The vet said that there is no problem with having to discard eggs.

Hope this helps - I will also send this as a PM. Good luck.
