Onion Mildew?
« on: August 07, 2010, 18:07 »
I think my onions have mildew  :(

I've not come across it before but have googled some pics and the leaves look the same... very grey and collapsed  >:(

I assume that's it for the onions now?
Shall I lift and attempt to dry them?
Are they going to be edible?
Should I just throw them away?

Poor things really could have done with some more growing time.

I could give up chocolate but I'm not a quitter.

Ditto >:(.
I lifted mine and have started to dry them out. Reports vary as to whether they will keep or not but we will both find out :D.
All my spring onions and shallots were also infected. The spring onions of which I had 6 different lots grown in succession died off and were thrown.
Hopefully the disease has been due to the weather conditions and doesn't lay dorment in the ground over winter.
To be on the safe side I started using the onions a few weeks ago.

We have this problem most years on our site most people now just plant overwintering onions so they should have reached maturity before the Downey Mildew strikes.

YES Thats it you might get a little regrowth but its not worth bothering as you would have lifted them in a few weeks anyway.

YES Lift them

YES They are still edible just use up any that had gone to seed first

NO Def do not throw away

Thanks for your replies. :)

I've only been growing veg a couple of years and I've never seen mildew before.... I was shocked how quickly it devastated the leaves

I'll pop up the plot in the morning and start to lift the onions.
