I've been reading up on red mite control, I've read soooo much my heads spinning, and it all says that the little swines live in the cracks and crevices of the chicken coop. Would it be worth sealing as many of the cracks, joins, knot holes etc with silicone or a similar air tight/water tight sealent in an attempt to reduce the living quarters for the mini-monsters?
Im having my coop delivered next week, is there anything else I can do, while constructing it, that would make it less of a welcome home to the mites? Sorry for keep posting and waffling on , and I hope I'm not doing peoples heads in, I just want to get it right 1st time. Cheers folks xx

I have been reading that a diatom slurry mix seems to be one of the best preventative measure painted all inside the coop. Have a look at this thread that Joyfull gave meon a  previous thread:

I will be painting this all inside my coop regularly as a preventative plus the usual cleaning.

We have been keeping hens for 3 years now and have never had any problems with red mite(touch wood).I think the best thing is to stop worrying about it as it may never happen,you might be lucky like us and never have a problem with mites.Enjoy your chooks and cross the bridges as you come to them.
