Bad sleeping habits and an ill hen
« on: October 13, 2010, 12:46 »
I've recently got myself some poultry. I started off with 1 hen and 1 rooster which refuse to go into the chicken coop unless i lift them in and close the door(now I just let them do as they please). I then got 4 more hens which will go in. None of them use the perch and either sleep in the floor or in the nest boxes causing a mess.

I've now noticed that my white silkie hen has a gooey discharge from her eyes and cannot see anything meaning she isn't eating and shes gettin picked on by the other hens.

I really don't no what to do

Hi
I'm not that experienced but I would say the most urgent problem would be your silkie.
It could be an infection and she could need antibiotics or maybe its either dust in her eye or an injury. I would try to bring her into your house and try to bathe her eye. Try hand feeding her too! If she is really ill she should be isolated from the rest of your flock anyway.
More experienced people will come along shortly, Good luck and keep us posted  :)

Hello Nate, welcome to the joys of chicken keeping ::)

I'd get her to a vet, better safe than sorry, as Pauline says, bathe her eye with warm salt water, hand feed her and make sure she gets plenty of water.

Let us know how you get on :D

I've blocked off the nesting boxes for my POLs because they were sleeping in them and after a couple of days they seem to have got the hang (?) of roosting. I'd sort the eye situation as the others have suggested. Hope it goes OK  :)

Re salt water - it must not be too strong. Recomend 1 pint of boiled water to a level teaspoon of salt. Good luck :)
