Real Problem With Tomatoes - Advice Please
« on: August 03, 2010, 15:31 »
Hi,
I have about 90 San Masano Italian Plum Tomatoes in & everything has been going well up until now.
hey are very easily falling off of the plant (unripened) & it seems the majority of them have what I can only guess is Blossom End Rot. Every ripened Tomato I have literally thrown away because of this. They are very flat & rotton on the ends. There are alot of green ones that appear to be the same, I have noticed that some have a little mark on them which looks like it is coming from the inside, & when cotting them open it is indeed rotting from the inside out.
I am totally fed up, this is the main thing that we grow and it is deverstating throwing them all away.
They have been fed weekly, watered regually. Any ideas what has caused this & anything I can do to save the rest?
Your views much appreciated! Thank you.

my Incas had blossom end rot too..only got one or two decent fruit off the plant, although I was not impressed by the flavour to be honest so wont be growing them again. But I have now got rid of that plant. At least the other tom plants in the greenhouse have shown no sign of it. But I share your annoyance

Blossom end rot is lack of available calcium. The calcium can't be drawn up from the soil because there is not enough moisture at root level.
So, it usually means you are just not watering them as much as they need.

San Marzano are a b@gger for this, they seem to suffer when other toms may not.
I had this happen a lot for the last 2 years, so changed to a different variety this year and have no trouble, despite the drought.

Last year and this I have grown San Marzano Redorta (from Franchi) which has proved  much less prone to blossom end rot.

Well thanks for the advice. Have been down and given them a good water & will keep them off of my list of seeds next year.
I did grow them last year, but I had quite a few varietys of Plum & didn't have much problems at all but then we had alot of rain compared to this dry summer. Just can't seem to win this year, it's definetly been a hard one for me anyway!
