I have never grown garlic before either. I ordered some Jolimont bulbs from Dobies to plant this year, can't wait to taste them next year!!

I think these specialist Garlic companies, particularly the Isle of Wight lot, are a rip off. You can buy good quality bulbs elsewhere for a lot less. We have had a fantastic crop (though I do think it is a particularly good year) of Cristo from Taylors Bulbs bought at RHS Harlow Carr for £2.49 for 3 large bulbs (hardly the cheapest of outlets) that compares with something like £8 from IoW.

You may well be right - we only bought our garlic from the farm shop on the Isle of Wight because we happened to be on holiday there, so no P & P. Also we USED to live very close to RHS Harlow Carr so had the option to go there too, but we have since moved. So my next lot of garlic will be from wherever it is cheapest!

I will re plant all the cloves the following year and just save what I need for the year after and so on.  Eventually that has to become worth it I would think, I go through at least 1 bulb per week

Thats my plan too Cazzy... at 39p per bulb, even if I buy 10 bulbs (avg 15-20 sets per bulb) from suppliers, I would only spend say £10-15 at most, out of that I would probably get in the region of 150-200 sets.
That would give me a massive return on my investment.. quids in I say...
