suspect pea moth
« on: August 02, 2010, 20:05 »
Sorry no pics. After clearing my pea bed I started to de-pod the peas (50+ pods) all except one were absoultely fine. The one had what looked like brown sugar inside and the peas were half eaten along with a small green caterpillar about 3/8" long. Having used the site search function and googled "pea moth" I reckon that's the culprit . But no sign of an entry hole, though I may have wrecked that whilst opening the pod. So was it pea moth? Why only one pod infected? Will it be an issue next year even if I crop rotate as I assume the moths simply fly to the nearest pea plant when they emerge.

I only had a couple of pods affected this year..........so not a bad year :)
I don't think you know from one year to the next, but the earlier peas always suffer less than later sown ones.
Considering that my first sowing failed and I resowed at the beginning of June, I think I got off lightly

I wouldn't ask why only one. I'd be grateful!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The pea moths get grubs into pods by laying eggs on the emerging pea foliage. These eggs then hatch and the grubs crawls into the developing pods by making a tiny tiny hole (that cant be seen by the naked eye)

I hate them - you were lucky to get away with one as DD says, I had a load on my first sowing  :(

So it was pea moth then?
Seems I was lucky to get only one infected pod so I'll take that as a piece of good fortune. :D

Your description does not sound like pea moth to me.
My experience of them is that they look like maggots, white, not green.
I have not yet seen any this year.
Often there are several in a peapod.
Have a look at:
http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/techniques/pests/pea-moth.htm

It says brown/green on the above link, but in my experience they are more white than green.

I think the colour depends on the maturity of the grub. I've certainly had green ones.

The description of the excrement is a classic one.
