Ill hen
« on: July 31, 2010, 18:22 »
my hen Bindi is a cuckoo maran and she is around a year old. yesturday she didn't seem herself and today i have been keeping an eye out because she is all hunched up and just sits in a corner. Can i help her? I rescued her from a horrible place and she doesn't like people very much but she is getting there, so i don't want to take her into the house or anything. So is there anything i can do for her? she is quite pale in the face  :(

are there any other symptoms besides being hunched up? Have you felt her crop and her abdomen? When did she last lay? Have you felt under her wing to check her temp? Is she eating and drinking? Whats the colour of her comb? When was she last wormed? What are the state of her poohs? Is she snotty, rattly chest, gaping, clear eyed etc?
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hi Chloe :)

I'm sorry to hear your hen doesn't look good :(

Is she eating and drinking well?
How long ago did you get her?
Is she getting bullied by the others?

she last layed last wednesday i think, and yes she does get bullied. it is very strange becuase she gets chased sometimes by our bantam cockerel and we don't know why  our other cockerel and hens are fine with her. Her crop is quite full and she is eating fine and drinking ok. Her comb and wattles are light pink. She isnt sneezing or anything she just sits down, puff's her feathers out and sits hunched up  :(

That's just what my little hybrid did when I first got her. I think sitting quietly and hunched up with feathers puffed and eyes closed can be a symptom of stress - sort of trying to be invisible to the others - she's still bottom of the pecking order and can revert now and again if there's been squabbling over treats for instance, but she's perfectly healthy and laying. I'd suggest making sure there's always more than one water/food point so they don't have to confront bigger hens all the time to eat and drink. Otherwise check her over really carefully for mites, lice, injuries etc. and keep a close eye on her because it could also be the first symptoms of illness.

hi thanks, she is a buff orpington and she is not laying yet and has not yet since she hatched! There is plenty of food bowls and water but she tends to stick to indoors she often comes in the kitchen and sits with the babies, hope she is not unwell and is just stress and she can come out of it as dont want to cull her as she seems to be eating and drinking fine and chases the flies that land in the garden, only time will tell i ghuess, thanks again
