Tomato Mould
« on: July 20, 2010, 13:21 »
Have a plastic 4 x 6 foot greenhouse up top of garden which has 3 tomato plants and 2 cucumber plants in as well as 2 melons and 2 peppers.  Everything seemed to be doing very well, have had lots of cucumbers off the one plant and the tomatoes are producing lots of fruit.  Went away for a long weekend leaving father in law to look after stuff and have come back to a lot of leaf mould on tomatoes!  In fairness I never showed him how to open and roll up door (which I do everyday) and he just left it unzipped, hence I believe a lot of humidity has occured in greenhouse which toms do not like.  Anyway, to cut a long story short (too late!!), I have cut off all the affected leaves, which now unfortunately leaves the plants looking a little bare.  How much will this affect them and is there anything I can use organically to stop the mould from spreading further?  I have taken one of the cucumber plants out to create more room and am thinking about just leaving door open permanently.  Any advice would be most appreciated as this is the first year I have had any form of sucess with my toms (the dreaded blight has struck 3 years in a row >:()  and they are doing so well would hate to see them go downhill.
I have a pair of secateurs and I'm not afraid to use them!!

alwayshopeful..I have had the same problem, and have removed all of the leaves with any trace of mould. My toms are producing well, but have no leaves below 3 ft off the ground. The removal of the leaves does not seem to have done any damage, and I look like getting an excellent crop this year.

theakston_uk..It looks like old leaves to me, not blight. Perhaps they need a feed?

I agree with Azubah  old leaves, take a lot off and improve the air circulation and also lets some sunlight get to the fruit.

Always hopeful........the toms should be ok as long as they have some top leaves on them :) As long as you keep them well ventilated there shouldn't be any more mould.
I have the g/house door open 24/7 at the moment.
It's a toss up I'm afraid.....keep them shut up and the toms get mouldy, keep them open and blight spores may possibly get in!

Theakston it looks like magnesium deficiency to me, have a Google and see if you agree. If you agree you need to spray with epsom salts 20g to a litre of water :)

Thanks for the feedback folks, nipped down to the plot before and removed all of the leaves with traces of mould on, which were all at the bottom of the plants. There are now no leaves touching the floor, most of the plants have got fruits on them and they all look in good condition, thanks again, Stu

I've removed the discoloured leaves should I spray the rest of the leaves with epsom salts?
