Help!!
« on: July 12, 2010, 13:53 »
I pickup the wrong bottle and ended up spraying some weedkiller on my lettuces, I saoked them with hosepipe to clean them (before the ban started). It must not have been more than 2 minutes from sprying to washing. The lettuces have shown effects of anything happing to them.(it's been 5 days) will they be ok to eat still.

My best guess is you'll be fine - if you hadn't washed the herbicide off then the plants would have died. However, don't sue me from the grave if I'm wrong!  :)

When our polytunnel blew over a couple of years ago we were very upset and recued as many seedlings as we could, brought them home and put them on the dining table.  We sprayed them with bleach instead of water (not done that again, always write on the bottle now and leave the water bottle in a different place to cleaning stuff!) - surprisingly very little died :)

The lettuces have shown effects of anything happening to them? Are they affected or not?

Some weedkillers seem to take an age to show any sign that you've used them but as you washed it off quickly I would take all the outside leaves off and just eat the hearts that it wouldn't have touched anyway.

But i still wouldn't fancy them

I'm guessing it was a glyphosate based in which case I'd probably risk it.

If it was glyphosate the lettuces will take a couple of weeks to start dying.  While eating them probably will not harm you why take the risk for a lettuce?

Sow some more seeds today!
