I think 2 of my chicks are cockerels
« on: July 02, 2010, 13:39 »
Hi,
I own Pekin Bantams and I successfully hatched 3 eggs around 9 weeks ago and mum has just left the chicks to get on with things theirselves. However, 2 of the chicks have much redder combs than the other one and last night I witnessed them squaring up to each other and attempting a little chick fight.
Does this mean I have 2 cockerels?
I already have a "daddy" cockerel and 6 grown hens so does this mean that I will have to part with the 2 new cockerels?
If so, I have no idea what I should do with them perhaps try and advertise for someone to give them a loving home?
Please can someone give me some advice as I couldn't find any old posts on here that could help.
Thank you

Why not post a picture then we could let you know, the combs are a lot bigger on a male and red, just because they have squared up to each other doesn mean they are males i have had girls do that as well. if you have one of each sex it should be easier to tell them as you can compare them. As for rehoming male pekins it does seem to be difficult in my area hopefully you will have more luck.

does the other one with the paler comb have a longer tail?
Staffies are softer than you think.

No it doesn't look like the paler one has a longer tail.

Following up, I heard one of the chicks crowing this morning which sent my "established" cockerel into a crowing competition frenzy - poor neighbours!!!

As you can see from my incessant questions, I am quite new to keeping chickens and I haven't had any advice about what to do with any unwanted boys.

Can anyone help please?

Thank you

as a boy and a pure breed you my be able to rehome him - take a look at the poultry swap shop (no selling allowed) or advertise him on the classified section - there should be a link to that at the top of the page  :)
