Spuds
« on: July 13, 2010, 16:59 »
A quick newbie question,

My maincrop spuds are flowering, does this mean that they want to be harvested or do i wait until the foliage starts dying back, I just thought it was too early to even consider harvesting main crops, yet some of the books i have read say to harvest spuds when they flower.

If you want to be happy for a long time - fall in love.

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

Have you eaten all your FE and SE ?

Have furtle - if its big enough to eat, do just that  :D If you're planning on storing you really need the skin to have formed so they store better. Mine have been in flower for at least 2 weeks but they'll stay there until I've eaten the FEs  :D

Id certainly leave them then, 6 months a sack isn't going to do them any good at all and Id be surprised if they not all eaten by December  :D . If you have enough planted do try them fresh out of the ground, they taste so much better.

Most people put a few FE in next month so they have 'new' spuds for Christmas dinner.

If you're planning to store, do  not even consider lifting spuds until the foiliage dies back. The spuds need to be mature.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

and there in a nutshell is your answer Jamie  :D
