Any tips for growing bigger garlic please
« on: July 07, 2010, 21:25 »
Hi,

I have just a harvested my garlic and the bulbs are quite small.  I planted it in october so it had a long growing season.  Any tips for bigger garlic next year?

Other than lifting the potatoes, I like nothing better than digging up the garlic.
Last year they were poor, this year I bought planting bulbs from a supplier as opposed to supermarket stuff.
I applied phostrogen, sulphate of ammonia and watered when needed. The over winter bulbs look good, I haven't yet dug up the spring planted bulbs. I am keeping the best of the crop to plant later.

I'm really pleased with mine (over-wintered). Just had a well composted and manured raised bed and watered occasionally. Didn't feed at all......

I lifted one today.  Bulb still hadnt split into cloves, which I was surprised at.  The whole thing was a decent size mind you.  The green tops still havent died back so Im hoping I just lifted too soon.  The taste was a bit disappointing as well.

Some garlic varieties simply aren't as large as others so this could be part of why yours are small. At a garlic fair, I bought a variety called Crystal Rose which is larger than any of the garlics I've grown, but it didn't keep as long as smaller ones do.
I plant mine in lots of aged manure and they've never disappointed.

I grew lots this year. I found the stuff from the supermarket I planted was poor but the proper seed garlic has done really well. I used some T &M onion fertilizer but did not do a lot of watering. I am keeping my biggest stuff to plant again in October along with some more seed garlic.

I thought all bulb crops needed regular watering so the bulb can swell, so I've been watering my garlic (and shallots and onions) every day in the hot weather. It is a raised bed with well drained soil so it isn't getting waterlogged at all. Am I doing the wrong thing?
