Red gooseberries
« on: June 24, 2007, 11:33 »
I inherited a couple of gooseberry bushes on my new allotment, and one is covered in gooseberries.   I haven't picked any yet, but they are starting to turn red - are they ready for picking, or should I let them turn fully red first ?

Generally - and I only say - generally, red gooseberries are desert ones and can be used for eating as they are sweeter.

They can be picked earlier and used for cooking, but generally (again), the longer you leave them, the sweeter they get, but you can use them now for pies, jams etc.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

We have a few red ones too so I tried one today. Yummy! A bit like a juicy red grape. Shame most of them dropped or were nicked by the birds. I didn't bother netting them when I thought they were green ones

Red gooseberries are delicious, the squirrels can attest to that, as they ate all but half a pound of them last year :o

I was waiting for the "right time" to pick them, I'm picking them a lot earlier this year :tongue2:

I did make some amazing jam with the few I got off the bush though.
Organic where possible, unless it involves the snails that now seem to be eating the slug pellets for fun

Thanks everyone,

Aunt Sally, you really shouldn't have posted that link - I checked and found the reference to gooseberry wine - my poor liver

Anyone have a recipe, please
