empty crop?
« on: June 28, 2010, 14:04 »
So Flora one of my RIR's has what feels like a permenantly empty crop. I watch her and she feeds fine but never seems to be full, also she has  foaming at the beak and a kind of sneaze?
Or perhaps she's trying to clear her throat? She's had a runny nose for a while now as did my Buff Orpington(who has cleared up now) but Honey never got this foaming at the beak thing and her crop is nearly allways full she's the greediest of my girls by far.
Any ideas, I can't feel an obstruction and her breath doesn't smell overly foul.
I started Flubenvet on Sunday just incase.
1 Blue Orpington, 1 Buff Orpington and 2 Rhode Island Reds.

This sounds as though it may be mycoplasma, in which case the wormer won't help. I'm sure someone who knows more about this will be along shortly. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Is she a new hen as myco can rear its head when a hen is stressed?  One of my hens started sneezing soon after arrival, wasn't feeding well and started to lose weight. She had been wormed so knew it wasn't gape worm causing respiratory problems.
Anyway she needed 2 courses of antibiotics to control symptoms and is now wonderful.
Perhaps a visit to the vet is needed?

These are my first hens, I got all 4 together from the same breeder, she had the Two Orpingtons in one section and the Rhodies in another.
They've been with me since 12th April.
A few wks after they arived the Buff Orpington started with a runny nose, which has finally stopped. But this Rhodie picked it up, she however has this odd sneeze. and seems to be skinnier or am I imagining that because of her crop feeling empty constantly?
the Buff allways has a full crop she's first to a worm or apple slices if I throw them a treat ect. But Flora(thats the rhodie) is still eating drinking ect just this empty crop and the snotty nose sneezing ect.
The woman I got them from used VermX so I thought best to worm them propperly as it doesn't have any proven effectivenes.  Am I right to feel so concerned or is it just a cold?
The foaming at the beak is worrying but her face is not swolen and her eyes are clear and bright. She does seem a bit withdrawn however.

She is snotty, sneezy and withdrawn and you think she has lost weight then I feel it's wise to take her to the vet. The senior members on this site are usually concerned when a chicken is subdued as they 'hide illness' and can be very sick by the time symptoms present.
