red and black currants when should they be ripe?
« on: July 01, 2010, 16:45 »
Another question from me about when things are ready as it is my first full year and do not know when things will be ready.  So red and black currants when are they ready.
Time waits for no man and I can't wait for growth.

Picked mine Monday, but im down south. I think you are about 2 weeks behind up there. Pick one and if it tastes right, go ahead and pick.

About 20 seconds before a flock of birds lands and eats the lot! ;)

Or as Fatcat says try a few and if your lips dont pucker, get picking!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

with the recent heatwave, most of my white, red and black currants are ripened and ready for harvesting (another way of knowing besides taste is that the fruit change colour and take on a more glossy look, and are squishy when you pinch a fruit)  I've got 3 different varieties of redcurrants and one is definitely earlier than the others  :)

i'm in warwickshire and usually harvest around my daughters birthday 18th july.  wen she was newborn my blackcurrants were ready so i put her in the moses basket and put her under the garden bench on the veg patch - couldn't waste the fruit!  My aunt chose that day to visit, she wasn't amused  my daughter will be nine soon and now she grows her own!!
