Would a goat keep Mr Fox away?
« on: June 25, 2010, 21:46 »
Ive been planning on getting a goat for some time now, and OH has just asked me whether keeping the goat in the same field as the chooks would deter a fox. If it would than we would put our plan into action sooner rather than later.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Mary.

I'm not sure about goats but Alpacas are meant to be fantastic as a fox deterrent.  Bit more expensive than a goat though!

Don't know about goats but alpacas are supposed to be great as pigeonpie said :)
2 Springer Spaniels, 1 Speckled Sussex,  1 Cuckoo Maran, 1 Light Sussex, 1 Welsummer, 2 Barnvelders and 2 silver Pencil Wyandotes.

Imo there would be dead hens before the goat or alpaca stood up even if you had one per hen.

Llamas are used to chase off predators in their native land. They are being used over here to keep foxes away at lambing time. Cheaper than alpacas too I think. :) The only thing is, you get some that can't be bothered! :D

I've seen the bullocks chase a fox but I wouldn't want one in the garden - I think goats are a bit destructive too...

I now have the image of a can't be bothered llama leaning against a tree inspecting it's nails or reading a book whilst the fox causes carnage!
