pecking spray
« on: June 24, 2010, 10:11 »
Any experiences of this being used? I'm thinking of getting some for one of my poor newbies that is being pecked like mad (nettex spray)... do they work well?

Thanks!

If the Nettex is like the one I have, it's not bad, but UKADEX is more stinky and works better.  Some chickens are easily put off by the anti-peck sprays, others will peck anyway.  All you can do is try it and hope it works for you before your little one gets killed!

did you do a gradual introduction with the new ones? Do you have several feeders and drinkers plus spaces for them to hide? The pecking order thing is perfectly normal and can last several weeks when an uneasy truce will happen when they all know their places. If it persists and the spray doesn't work you can get beak clips which allow them to eat and drink but not pull out feathers.
As well as anti pecking spray I would advise you to get some purple spray (from horsey places) which will disguise any blood as chickens go mad for red and this could lead them to killing the chicken  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hi, Last year when I got my 2 newer hens, after one had died. From the first day they started to peck the one hen I'd already had.  After 2 weeks of constant watching and scolding one morning Laya had blood on her bottom . I bought the anti pecking spray but they pecked her through it, so I followed the useful stickies link and ordered beak bits.  They were fiddily to fit but worked brilliantly. Good Luck.
