broody hens
« on: June 21, 2010, 21:52 »
Hi all, haven't been on for a long time and it is nice to see good advice still available. I was wondering if I put fertilised eggs under one of my broody hens wether the other which is sitting next to it a lot of the time will rear as well ie. two hens for mother. Does any one have experience of this? I was thinking it might work out well for the chicks if they have  two hens looking out for them. would this work?

you will need to seperate the broody into her own broody coup as the other could attack the chicks when they are hatched.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Ok thanks, I was wondering if this would apply if both were broody at the same time and assumed them to be their own as they are both in the same nest squashed togethr on top of the unfertile eggs and golf balls I put in until I recieved the real deal.

yes as they would both either assume that they were their chicks and so fight over them or kill the chicks because they thought they belonged to the other and were in the way of their chicks. It is best to seperate them even if it means each hen has just one or two eggs each just to be safe.
