Onions

Iplanted some onions in March not sure of type, can't find the net they were in.  I know they were white and possibly stuttgart.  They are about spring onion size at the mo'.

When do you harvest?

How much water do you give them, I have a vague memory of someone saying something about watering, done a search can't find anything?

They'll let you know when they're ready. The stems will keel over. Augustish - depends how this weather goes!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

re watering, my advice is don't let them dry out, last year I grew them from seed and did no watering, they'll survive all right but will just not grow. I think the term is they will 'check' now I water whenever we have three or more days of dry weather - stick your thumb in the ground near them, if it feels dry then water! Another great tip I picked up on this forum, simple but effective.
This year my onions are doing really well and swelling quite nicely, I'm really hopeful for a decent crop!
As DD says, let them fall over then after a couple of weeks (I think) lift them and allow to dry in the sun before storing.

Regards,

Wayne.
Cheers,

Wayne.

Net? So you planted sets?  They seem very small (unless you grow very large spring onions).

Usual harvest time would be Aug/Sep I'd guess
