How can you despur a cockerel?
« on: June 17, 2010, 18:36 »
Our cockerel's spurs are dangerously sharp   .

Does anyone know how we could despur him? Or would we have to take him to the vets to have him despured? Or is there a way we can file them down (bearing in mind he is very scared of us and we are frightened to pick him up for we don't want him to hurt us (with his spurs as they are so sharp))?

Thanks  :) ;)

I think you have to take the bull by the horns so to speak.

Whatever you do you are going to have to handle him  ;) even if you take him to the vets.

We use a Dremmel to keep our dogs nails down - less risk of cutting the quick.  Not had chance to try it on a cockerel yet.

If I were seriously worried about being attacked I suppose I would use a blanket or bath-towel - but I'm a Newbie and no doubt some off the others will let us know whether that's an option.

Rather an apt posting for me start with this morning having been 'got' by my cockerel this morning - and I had shorts on!! We've had him for 18 months with no problems. My husband laid him on his side and held him there for a minute so hope this works.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Thank you everyone and the post from Muntjac is very helpful  :).

Whatever you do you are going to have to handle him  ;) even if you take him to the vets.

I know, I meant it would be difficult to file his spurs ect. whilst holding him  :).
