« on: June 20, 2007, 13:06 »
... lordy I ordered some two years ago from somewhere or other, and now I can't find the details.  And searching google seems only to give me posh varnished bamboo about 3 inches in diameter ...

I need about a 100 7 or 8 ft ... anybody any ideas on a supplier??

On the subject of bamboo - I have a black bamboo in the garden and wondered if anyone knew how to harvest it for using as ordinary bamboo canes are used. Does it have to be dried out?
It is a large plant but not invasive and I thought it would be good to use some of the big old stems

Brucesgirl-just cut them close to the ground and use, they don`t really need drying as they will do that in situ.

I always stand my canes in a bucket of wood preservative for a couple of hours when I first get them - they last a lot longer that way.

... my father has a thicket of bamboo that he harvests once a year and dries them for a year before using (not enough to give me 50 though!).

In his experience if you cut them and plant them, they have a nasty habit of rooting ...
