Beans a little slow...
« on: June 11, 2010, 11:00 »
I am growing french beans Cobra i think. They were planted about 7 weeks ago under glass, were looking strong and healthy and i planted them out between 3-4 weeks ago.
Since then they have hardly grown an inch only 6-8 inches tall. whereas my second planting of seeds 2 weeks ago are taller than the ones in the ground.

The leaves are a little on the yellowing side i have given them a drink with Miracle grow liguid veg feed but no change.

Any ideas what could help them along?

Most beans need sunshine, warmth and moisture to really get into top gear; here the weather has been all of those things in the last few weeks but not all at once!

Things looking up now weather-wise and your beans (and everything else!) will almost certainly cheer up as well.  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Bean leaves a little yellow here too. They are going to get a dose of Nettle Tea this evening to pick them up.

Did you harden them off before transplanting? It can be a shock to the system that takes a bit of recovery time.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

From the replies it seems that almost everyone is having the same problems with french beans.  Mine were greenhouse raised, hardened off for 2 weeks then planted out a while back.  They just sat and became an embarrasment.  Then last week suddenly they seem to have doubles in size.  My theory is, we had a few warm days then rain and this seems to have woken them from a semi-domant period.

My runners have started to take off in the last few days, as have the Cobra, but the borlotti beans are still looking sorry for themselves - still small and pale though they were lovely plants when I put them in a month ago.  Seems we are all having similar problems - I think the dry weather hasn't helped.

Mine don't seem to be getting any bigger either - I think time runs more slowly on that bit of the plot  :)
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

I've got runners that are finally taking off, French beans that have been taking 3 weeks to germinate sown direct, and French climbing (Cobra) that have also taken a fortnight to germinate sown direct.  Half my broad beans appear to be dwarf when they aren't suppoed to be, but the "dwarf" ones are starting to pod, whereas the ones that didn't get stunted are absolutely bursting with flowers.
All in all a bit mixed!
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

My beans have always sulked and gone yellow for a while after planting out, then they suddenly decide to get on with growing  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

They all turn out alright in the end, it's just a case of being patient.  Unless you grow for showing what the heck.
