New Coop
« on: June 11, 2010, 17:57 »
Hi all,

I am trying to build a new coop trying being the word, any suggestions as to whats the best material to use for the roof to keep waterproof? Also what do i look for to treat the wood with (which is safe for chickens)? It is old pallet wood also was thinking of painting outside to look bit brighter as can get a bit dull up here.

Thanks for any help   :)

I would say onduline for the roof - no where for the nasty red mite to hide. Any wood care product is safe for chickens if it says safe for bats on it.
You say it's dark up here but where is up here?  ???
Staffies are softer than you think.

When i say dark i mean cloudy and wet!! I am in the northwest Chester. So thought i better brighten up the garden by painting the coop!

I is very expensive to properley 'waterproff wood' and would take around 15 coats of high quality varnish, my suggestion (what I did and what has worked great for me) is to make the roof with waterproof felt first and then add wooden slat on top of the roof felt, any little drips that get in past your wooden roof will drain away on the felt and keep inside nice and dry
