peas
« on: June 11, 2010, 22:57 »
Hello everyone.
Just joined and new to the site. Had my allottment for twelve months now, usual thing, totally overgrown and uncultivated sinbce Noah launched his Ark. Turning it all into 4ft wide raised beds of varying lengths and everything going well except my peas. Grewthem on inside compost filled toilet rolls and they germinated and grew well, planted them out and within a week they were pale green/yellow and looking decidedly sick. I've added some lime but doesn't seem to have made any difference. HELP.

Welcome to the site  :D

I'll pop you over to the Grow Your Own forum as more people there will see your post; feel free to pop back into Welcome for a welcome and to introduce yourself  :)

Re the peas, did you water them properly since they went in?  Why did you think lime was needed?  It's not a usual additive to the soil for peas.  I'd suggest a liquid feed like seaweed (maxicrop) or comfrey / nettle tea (leaves in water for a couple of weeks till it stinks to high heaven, then dilute to the colour of very weak tea before applying) and see if they perk up.  I suspect it may just be transplant shock, assuming they're not being eaten
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks Yorkie, lime was suggested by another allottment holder, interestingly, I was recently given a big bunch of comfrey which I added to a large water butt and yep it does smell, I'll give that a try, thanks.

I don't know where you are in the country (would help if you edited your profile to show this), but we've had cold northerly winds up here this week.  Enough to make anything sulk too!
