GREENS FOR THE GIRLS
« on: June 07, 2010, 14:43 »
Our girls love parsley and cabbage but are not too keen on lettuce. Should we introduce any other type of green stuff. We are novices and not sure what is safe to give them.

Do they have access to grass?  You could grow grass in trays, or buy a roll of turn every now and then :)

I don't think they really need much more than that.

Mine are just working their way through the lawn, they don't seem interested in anything else. Bless them!

You might find they prefer the lettuce hearts from icebergs rather than the outer leaves.

Dont give them cut grass as it quickly ferments and can cause Sour as well as Compacted crop, both serious conditions if not caught in time.

am realising how individual these girls are- mine hate cabbage but love lettuce. They also started on the potato leaves but I moved the pot as I thought they were poisonous?

I give mine weeds every time I have a weeding session, which is most days. They seem to like most of them  :)
Gone to seed kale was on the menu yesterday
Cabbage plants that had got too leggy

I don't give them much at once though as I don't want to upset their tummies

I'm fortunate enough to get fresh trims from a large kitchen where I work, so mine get swede skins, cauli rings, courgette ends etc. You should see them with the cauli rings and broccoli stalks.....stripped to bare bones in seconds, and the broccoli stalks are nothing but the hard skin after they've done. Plus weedings from the veg plot as and when. But don't leave your hand in too long if you put corn cobs down, they'll have that as well in the frenzy, lololol

If you give them potato make sure it's cooked first as starch is fairly undigestible unless cooked.
