I've been trying to work out if my garlic is hardneck or softneck.  Can't see any flowers.  It's "fokhagyma" variety.   Can't find anything definitive on the net - any ideas?
If it's softneck I might be a bit disappointed; the pesto sounds gorgeous.
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

I certainly hope so!  8)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

The plan is for the 240 to keep me going for years.. eat half plant half in Sept :)

That sounds a good Idea - I have planted about 160 - is Sept the time to plant them again? I think a lot of mine might be the hard neck garlic which is not supposed to store that well so I might be better using it as seed garlic again. Do you just harvest, dry then replant about Sept?
yeah that's all I will be doing. Mine normally keeps fine for months, as I only ever grow porcelain garlic. Never grown this much to allow my to grow the same again and eat. Just need a good summer to get me going :)

Prob end of Sept beginning of Oct.. Mmmmm chillies and garlic.. just wish I could grow ripe olives and I would then be in pure heaven!!!

I've just finished the last usable clove of garlic :( The rest have gone soft and mushy, and started to regrow.
I'll have to buy some at Crapco  sob sob.

How do you get them to store for longer?

It depends on the variety.  Hardneck varieties are best used by November but some of the softneck varieties can keep a lot longer.  I am growing Aquila, Solent and Picardy Wight this time.  Aquila is softneck so we will use those first.  According to the Garlic Farm, the other two softneck varieties store particularly well and will last until May the following year.

Last year I plaited mine and hung them from the rafters in the garage and we finished them by Easter - they were beginning to sprout a bit at the end  but they weren't mushy.  Can't remember what they were though - one of the Wights I think.

As for storage i stick them in the kitchen cupboard and they have always lasted till jan/feb when i usually run out. planted even more this year so glad to hear they may keep longer  :)
