using polytunnels
« on: June 18, 2007, 20:23 »
due to all of the damage caused by pigeons this year I am considering using polytunnels or large cloches for next year (apart from potatoes).  Can most vegetables be grown in polytunnels ok or is there some i should avoid.
A slug is for life not just for the allotment

Would netting not be the cheaper option? Poly tunnels & the like IMHO are OK for vegetables that like it a bit warmer, but I would have thought that with the more hardy ones they may be prone to bolt. I have to net just about everything, apart from spuds, beans & onions!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

netting or polytunnels ?

On our allotment the pigeons have been ripping the netting back to get at the plants - every allotment has been attacked. Perhaps netting and a scarecrow or strips of foil suspended across the allotment wil do. I agree polytunnels may be a bit expensive.

Try to get hold of some old scaffolding netting that works a treat, and can be found free on freecycle sometimes.

My son and his mate have managed to scrounge an old poly tunnel frame off someone at our site and they've used scaffolding netting to cover it, rather posh looking brassica tunnel they have now  :D
