Are there any herbs or plants that could be planted with the veg to help get rid of the insects??

sage with cabbages.
Borage with broad beans
marigolds for toms
Theres too many to carryon with.

nasturnums and marigolds bring in hover flys ect , preditors and lady birds which eat greenfly aphids ect

I surrounded my plot with tagetes and phacelia one year and the next year the hover flies took up residence - masses of them - then one morning I woke up to see my purple sprouting that was just about ready to pick had been totally stripped by pigeons...
