well I now have the denegard antibiotic liquid and have mixed 1ml with their aureomycin and 1/2 litre of water. Hopefully it will work (at a cost of over £70 it had better  ). Fingers crossed.
Staffies are softer than you think.

well whilst on the denegard and the aureomycin they seemed to recover but after a couple of days of being off them (they had 10 days of aureomycin and 5 days of denegard) their symptoms are starting to reappear  :(.
A visit to the vets was made this morning and swabs were taken from both of them for sensitivity and cultures plus a bottle of Tylan soluble antibiotic to mix in their water. My stock of antibiotics will soon be as big as the one at the vets but my purse will be thinner than theirs
According to my vet there are hundreds of antibiotics that we could try

Just one question how on earth do I weigh out 1 gram of the powder?

You can get small pocket scales from ebay.  They normally weigh up to 100g in 0.1g increments.

thanks for that Casey, but as I need to get them started on these meds as soon as possible I have found some digital scales at Argos that weighs in grams (my kitchen scales are the old fashioned balance scales with brass bell weights in pounds and ounces ), off out now to pick them up  :)

Oh joy, what a shame- my hen is still not right either and despite lots of homework before getting them I don't think I realised how involved I would become with both mine and other peoples chooks. Fingers crossed.
Dizzy Lizzy I found an online pharmacy selling Baytril 100ml of 2.5% (25mg/ml) for £28 -42 inc VAT but not sure if site allows me to 'advertise' it.  Perhaps someone can tell me? Also stock Tylan 100g soluble for £21-34.

Lizzie, not sure how long the hunky vet (too young for me ) is going to ring me when he gets them - but of course there is a bank holiday. Got my modern scales that weigh in this new fangled metric system so will start them on their meds.
Jane, there are plenty of places on line to get meds from (and we have no problem you putting their name on here so long as it isn't your company) but I think for antibiotics you will need a presciption from a vet before you buy them and of course your vet will charge for this and then you have to wait for delivery. With this being a reacurring problem with the poots I am better of getting this all on record at the vets so they know where to go next. And yes they do worm their way into your affections don't they Jane, hope your girl gets better soon too  :)
Will keep you all posted as to how they get on  :)

So here is an update on the Pootle. They are still on their tylan water and now the results are in from the swabs - they have a bacterial infection in their eyes (Mrs Poot has it worse than Mr Poot) - the cause? More than likely as they don't perch and Mrs Poot either sleeps standing up (usually) or lying down with her head bent forward and her beak touching the floor. When she got myco and the bubbly eye a piece of muck more than likely got stuck to some bedding and then stuck to her bubbly eye (had to remove bits several times from near her eyes). They are now both on eye drops twice a day and these drops are both anti bacterial and an anti inflammatory steroid. They are human ear drops called Gentisone HC ear Drops - gentamicin + hydrocortisone acetate.
Now in their new Pootle palace Grannie Annies Brian has placed a perch in there and even though the previous night they refused to stay on it (after about 6 attempts they waited until I closed the door and jumped off) but last night again after many attempts they stayed on or at least they were still on it at 6 this morning.
So besides the risk of dirty eggs or sore chickens from sleeping in nest boxes and their pooh etc there is also the risk of eye infections (she didn't sleep in a nest box but on the floor by the way).

Sorry to hear of your poorly chooks and I hope they'll be better soon

The really cold spell caused problems for my hens and I think if that happens again they're all going in my big shed. My husband will be delighted  :D

thanks CQ, I think as these are so tiny they really suffered - I do know that a lot of people lost their poots over the last winter  :(. My other birds were fine in the snow. The poots now have a pootle palace and a run which by winter will have a roof on and removable sides to protect them.
