Excuse me for butting in here, its admirable that you both have done so much digging.

I prefer to adopt the no dig way myself.......hey no backache! And the wormies do all the heavy stuff for you.

We started by making raised beds then covering the grass (lawn) with thick cardboard, then mulching over with an 8" layer of manure. Granted this is not advisable in the summer months.

Then just plant through the cardboard into the soil beneath....no weeding, no watering and the following year, the soil is gorgeous dahlings   :D

I do appreciate however that a lot of folk love to dig, but I love my back!

Happy growing :D
Life is for living.....permaculture is for life.

I do sympathise, is spear grass a local name for couch? I havent heard of it.

We have the same problem on our organic growing and sustainable living project field. We put a section under silage plastic in feb. And have planted through it.

So far we have the odd creeping thistle popping through, but no couch grass as yet. We are experimenting as this is our first growing season on the field, The surface couch has died off.....it will be interesting to see how much does come back once the plastic comes off.

Please no one say 'all of it'.......everything planted is doing very well, except those that got caught by the late frost
