bonfire
« on: May 26, 2010, 09:15 »
Hi

I hope someone can help, ive just taken over an allotment and I would like to know if you can grow plants where a bonfire used to be? Will I need to add manure to the soil to improve it or can I just Rotavate over the patch and start using it ???

Many thanks

The bonfire ash won't be a problem but bear in mind that any humus in the soil will have been burnt to ash down to a fair depth so the water retaining capability will be reduced and very little in the way of soil organisms will be present.

If you can I would swap some of the soil from there with some from elsewhere on the plotand mix it up and add lots of organic matter.

The Ph will have been affected too.
I would rotavate and add some well rotted manure or compost.
It would be a good place for a fruit bush/tree.
