Mycoplasma
« on: May 21, 2010, 19:21 »
Just back from a visit to the vets with 1 of my ducklings, Mycoplasma  :( Have got baytril for the duckling and had to order tylan, online,  for the other girls. A couple of the others are sneezing and have a bit of nasal discharge but no bubbly eyes  :( :(

hopefully within a week they should be all ok, although if it is myco they will have it for life and another outbreak can occur in times of stress such as moulting  :(. I have my two sablepoots in my office recovering from it, they didn't respond too well to their normal antibiotic (aureomycin) so are now having a 5 day couse of denegard plus aureomycin and seem to be picking up  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Oh, im sorry Joy. I didnt know your poots have it too  :( Im glad they are on the mend though. Am i right thinking it wouldnt be fair to rehome them when better or add new girls to my flock? Also is there any egg withdrawel with Tylan?I have to give 0.5 grams per liter of water for 3 days, but vet said i can give it for long if i want too, Which seemed a bit strange to me, Should i just give it for the 3 days or give it for 5 or 7 days?

I have never used tylan but auremycin is a 7 day treatment and denegard tiamulin is 3 - 5 day treatment (I would think tylan is the same 3 - 5 day course but I'm sure some body who uses it will correct me if I am wrong). You should not breed from them but you can add more girls to your flock. Personally I wouldn't rehome as this would prove stressfull for them and it could flare up again  :(. If you read on here you will find lots of posts where people get hens then a week later they have a respiritoy infection - this will often be bought on by the stress of a new home.
Denegard has no withdrawal for eggs but I don't know about tylan sorry.

I thought that the new ones would catch it too.... I wont add any more hens to my layers as I suspect they have had it in the past... and are exbats so dont need any more stress in their lives.....

Can other hens not catch it??
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

they can, but if you keep the environment as stress free as possible then hopefully it won't flare up again. I had one several years ago and didn't seperate her but none of the others caught it (all were treated with A/Bs in their water just in case) and that hen never showed any sign of another outbreak. My two poots have had it and none of the others caught it off them either, I just have them in the house to make sure they get their medication  :)
