This teqnique is for those of you who like the controlled environment of pots but don't like how they limit the root growth.

All you need is some good soil and a 4-6 inch round pvc pipe.

dig a hole in the ground about 2-2.5 feet deep.  fill the bottom of the hole with gravel and insert the pvc pipe so that is barely sticking up.  fill pvc pipe with soil and plant.  another suggestion i have is throw a couple cut up fish to the bottom of the pipe.

I like this idea..it also sounds like it would help with a slug problem if you had the pipes sticking out of the ground enough. Im dreading the slugs when I get a lottie..everything else seems easily (hopefully) enough remedied (ie mesh covers etc) I grow in containers at the mo at the back where its paved, but in the front garden I have lost sooo many bedding plants its untrue I just cant get rid of the blighters!(thats a polite word that isnt usually used !)
