Celery advice please!
« on: May 16, 2010, 09:13 »
I bought the celery and wondered if it would actucally grow.
I saw the celery seeds and it looked like very, very fine sawdust. I wondered if it would grow.
It sat for three weeks in the propagator - I wondered if it would grow.
Hooray! It has grown!
Thing is, theres loads of it in each pot (due to the fairydust size of the seeds and my quantity vs quality apporach) and it all looks like cress.
Its about an inch tall, cant see any roots to speak of.

The seed packet says 'plant out in blocks to reduce light to the stems' - hmmmm.... methinks Im not quite at the block planting stage yet?

What on earth do I do with it now? Ta!!

what variety of celery is it?  There are two types - trench celery and non trenching celery. I've only grown the non-trenching stuff as I can't be bothered with digging trenches  :D

You'll need to prick it out and pot it on.  You can do little clumps if they're tiny as it does help hold each other up and you can later discard runts  :D  It is a bit tricky stuff as it's so tiny. I started mine quite a while ago and it's still only small even though it's been potted on. It's outside now hardening off ready for planting out on the plot. I think it's a bit tender as it says on the packet plant out May/June.  Once on the plot 9" spacings are recommended

Its easy to do too much celery I have somehow ended up with 50 of them.  I have kept them mostly indoors up to now, except for three under cut off coke bottles as an exeriment outside.  I potted mine on to those little plastic bag type 3" pots where they have sat for ages, they are doing fine just plenty of water as they are a bog plant.  Planting out in blocks is not really important, you know its just for whiter stems.  Everyone that eats our celery which is usually an apple green colour, says it doesn't taste much different to whitened.  I think the americans eat it greenish anyway.  The inner stalks will be whiter.  It stands quite well so you have plenty of time for them to get bigger.

Some are just seperated into cells, instead of pots, and I did that when they were about 2 inches high, not loads of root at that stage, they have a bit of a spurt when given there own space.  Just remember when planted out lots of water.

Non-tenching, I think! Cant find seed packet at back of garage! Thanks for the advice - glad its not just me! Will try potting it on and see how it goes!

I pricked out some into individual pots, and left the others where they were as a back-up - very crowded.  3 weeks on and they all look the same so i wouldnt worry if you choose to leave them to grow on a bit.  Mine are all same size so crowding hasnt seem to have affected them.

BTW, love home grown celery - its amazing, dont listen to all the doubters and celery haters!
