Moving my swedes
« on: June 07, 2007, 23:11 »
Can anybody tell me if I can move my swedes and replant them in a different plot on my allotment. I have about twelve 1 1/2"-2" tall and are about 5" apart and wanna put them about 12" apart and keep them all.

Cheers Steve

Two hopes - Bob Hope & no hope.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Just do it Sven - I always transplant swedes and have no problems at all.  I usually wait till they're about 5 - 6" high before I do it.  Don't worry if they flop over when you replant them, just keep them well watered and they'll be OK.

Swedes are brassicas an' they say all brassicas love root disturbance. Just do it carefully. I've transplanted parsnips before and got away with it.

I suppose if you take up enough soil with them then the disturbance could be minimal.....but there again I've never grown swedes, so what do I know!! ;)

I`m growing mine in modules to plant out when I have space so moving carefully should be OK.

Well you all have different opinions, so I think I will move a couple and see what happens.I will report back and let you all know the outcome. Thanks for all your replies.
