Here we go again.
« on: May 06, 2010, 17:02 »
Sure enough, I start everything with good intentions and already plans are thwarted by my cat and slugs. My cat has peed on my carrots that are just emerging in my table top raised bed as well as putting dirty great feet marks in the compost, destroying some. Ditto for spring onions. My greenhouse is shredded as he keeps clawing his way up it to be able to sit on the roof in the warm. I put cains, netting, plastic watering can on the top and still he is adamant to get on it. Spinach sewed in cool, damp and sheltered raised bed have still not emerged and probably wont just like last year and the year before.

My chard in the garden (something I always find very hard to grow) emerged along with the spilt bird seed so I couldn't tell the difference which ws which. Now all have been eaten bar one plant and thats after treating with slug nematodes.

And to top it all it's like ruddy winter out there.

Problem is - as I have found to my cost - cats love all that well dug soil and compost!  Could you sow carrots in containers?  I have done this and they are really coming along nicely (but small as yet).  Could do the same with spinach?  I'm sowing in succession - so only have 6 coming up.  But I have had to sow peas 4 times!

Vegetable growing is such a challenge

Our cat kept going on our flower beds at home wrecking the plants.
I tried everything to keep her off from netting to fishing line, i finally solved the problem.
Rose bush trimmings laid amongst the plants, cat doesn't go anywhere near them now  8)

Buy a kitty tray and keep them indoors. I have a ten, and a six year old and neither of them have been let out. They have a wire netting playpen just outside the backdoor that they can access through the catflap to get freshair and daylight, and they can rip and tear at the woodwork all they like.
Cats can't get out by themselves, humans let them out.  :)
