Spinach
« on: May 11, 2010, 20:43 »
Hi, :)
Does anyone know of a good variety of spinach that won't run to seed??
Thanks

I grow a perpetual one which goes through the winter before running to seed in spring.

Thank you viettaclark, but I forgot to mention I would prefer a Summer growing variety.

I grew New Zealand spinach for years (tetragonia) and it is perennial, crops all year round and the leaves are well flavoured.

I'd forgotten all about it til I saw your post, so now I have a new plot I shall be searching some out myself  :D

Think you misunderstood me! :D :D
Perpetual spinach can be planted now. It crops all summer and if you don't need the room and leave it, it carries on cropping really well until the following spring which is when it tends to bolt.

I've never managed to get NZ spinach to germinate so this time I presoaked it for 24 hours before sowing. It's still not come up yet

It germinates best in warm weather I seem to recall  :)

I agree with perpetual spinach.  It grew very well for me last year and I was harvesting it right through from summer until January this year.  It is quite a strong flavoiur but you can just keep cutting it and new leaves just spring up to replace them.  Got my seeds on-line from 'Real Seeds' who have some very interesting and unusual offerings.  Not sure of address but a google search should find them.

I started it off in a seed tray indoors but still no show.   I think it was KG magazine that recommended getting it going this way.

I just sowed straight in the bed (21 March) and they were up in the middle of April around the time of that nasty period of very hot days and very cold nights. I've got 2 5' rows up that will need thinning and that's plenty! They're not putting on much growth though. Everything's late with this cold weather.......

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions  :)
I'm now going to try both the perpetual and the New Zealand spinach.
Thanks again
